Note how much easier it is to interpret the active-voice version: Mary waved the fan. The reason is that no rearranging is necessary; the mind immediately goes about the business of interpretation. The slight difficulty we have with passive voice probably stems from the mind’s built-in propensity to view the world in terms of cause-and-effect relationships. Thus, the mind is programmed (hardwired) to see cause first and effect second. But passive voice puts effect ahead of cause, so the mind has to reverse their order to interpret the statement.
It comes naturally. But, there are literally hundreds of books, articles, videotapes, lectures, and courses on how to diverge, how to open the mind, how to brainstorm, how to generate creative alternatives. What does that tell us? That divergence doesn’t come naturally; we have to be taught how to do it. It tells us that, when it comes to diverging, humans are in trouble and need help. Analytic Confidence While problems come in all varieties, shapes, and sizes, each can be categorized in terms of the roles that fact and judgment play in analysis of the problem.
A memorable example of this focusing trait was the statement in 1912 by newswoman Mary Field as she covered the famous trial The People v. Clarence Darrow.
