Mann cleans his glasses, inaugurating an ongoing Spielberg theme, clarity of vision. A zoom in on the trucker’s hand approximates to Mann’s perspective. Everything is viewed through screens, explicitly when suddenly the image, like the supposedly burning celluloid of Bergman’s Persona, blurs and runs: a forecourt attendant, now entering the shot, is washing the windows, creating a barrier to identifying the trucker.
