There are different ways to group or categorize the resources depending on the project. The Organizational Breakdown Structure (OBS) is an organizational chart that shows the hierarchical structure of the project's organization. It represents what departments and functions are involved, what the lines of report are, or what the chain of command is. While the WBS shows the hierarchy among deliverables, the OBS shows the hierarchy of people and groups and the units responsible for the WBS components.
P reparation comes with learning and then putting what we learned into practice. To master the work breakdown structure (WBS) you need to first learn about it, and then put its concepts into practice in your real-world projects. Otherwise, what you know will remain at a theoretical and unproven level. Before I explain in the next chapter why I believe you should use the WBS and what its benefits are, I'll now define and explain the WBS and its application in programs and portfolios. WHAT IS THE WBS?
I complete the WBS as much as I can and then I start reviewing it with the project team. When needed, I also incorporate input and advice from experts. When I have a business analyst on my team, I work with the business analyst on the WBS from the very beginning. I often work on the WBS with my program manager or the manager of the Program Manager Office (PMO) as they provide valuable expertise. After those revisions with the team and/or experts, you go through different versions of the WBS with the stakeholders until you achieve a final version that is understood by everybody.
