S. Naval Academy [USNA], Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership, “Vice Admiral James B. edu/ethics) In the story of Admiral Stockdale, you see the importance of having a code to live by. The military has a simple and specific code of conduct in the event that an American soldier is captured and becomes a prisoner of war. The code gives the framework for a prisoner to resist with honor. During his captivity, Admiral Stockdale identified the five pillars of “combat leadership,” a special kind of leadership in times of what we later coined VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity).

Sometimes we have to, and we do it under adversity. But we’re a whole lot more than that. We are leaders possessing traits of physical and moral courage, teamability, and problem solving, traits that we recruit for, select, and train into every SEAL. The SEAL Ethos encapsulates it far better than the movies do. What are these special traits? In our context, the physical courage to be a warrior is obvious. Behind that, however, lies a deep well of moral courage—the honesty, humility, dependability, and emotional fortitude—that lead to trust and consistency of action.

Many of the prisoners credited these rules as giving them the strength to endure their lengthy ordeal. Drawing largely from principles of stoic philosophy, notably Epictetus’ The Enchiridion, Stockdale’s courage and decisive leadership was an inspiration to POWs and to military personnel everywhere. The climax of the struggle of wills between the American POWs and their captors came in the spring of 1969. Told he was to be taken “downtown” and paraded in front of foreign journalists, Stockdale slashed his scalp with a razor and beat himself in the face with a wooden stool, knowing that his captors would not display a prisoner who was disfigured.
