Within the organization of the academic disciplines, economics is the science of scarcity; sociology, the science of solidarity and politics, the science of violence within a framework of citizenship participation. In a more philosophical language, sociology has been generally interested in how strangers (competitive actors within the market place) can live together without perpetual con¯ict, that is how strangers can come to form social relations of friendship and companionship.
Very few departments in the humanities and social sciences now offer this. As universities move into virtual forms of service delivery, using the internet to provide online lectures and seminars, the sense of the university as a haven for critical culture is likely to dissipate.
