Digitization is changing the way that scholars perform research (Meyer and Schroeder 2015). We will see that the sort of KOS that will best serve interdisciplinarity is far more feasible in the digital world than in the age of card catalogues (see Chap.
Yet we tend to evaluate information retrieval only in terms of whether users find what they look for. We should instead/also appreciate the value of alerting them to a range of related paths of exploration (Miksa 1992; Warner 2000). We ‘must develop methods to allow online users to serendipitously discover relevant Glassick et al (1997, 9) worried that the ‘scholarship of integration’ was under-appreciated in the academy. They argued that this was needed to overcome the fragmentation and isolation of disciplines, and to make connections within and across disciplines.
Its purpose is twofold: to show that the interest in both interdisciplinarity and phenomenon-based classification is longstanding, and to identify (and transcend) the reasons why previous efforts to develop interdisciplinary KOSs were unsuccessful. Scholars favoring a disciplinary approach often advocate ‘domain analysis’: the careful identification of the terminology employed in a field.
