Operating on the “what if” theory, Kaufman very quickly alienated his star and producer. Eventually things came to a nasty peak during a series of shots on which Kaufman could not decide. Whether Eastwood acted properly in the situation is not for us to say, as we were not in the awkward position in which he had placed himself. Fiscally responsible to the studio (as always), he asked Kaufman to hop in a truck and go scout some locations for upcoming shots. While the director was off scouting, Eastwood told the Director of Photography (DOP) where to put the camera.

The story opens over the credits as a stranger moves through the wilderness, riding past the graveyard in a strange sense of foreshadowing and into the desolate and seemingly tragic little town. The stranger will not go unnoticed for long, as he is harassed by a local prostitute, whom he takes into an alley and rapes. Menaced in a barbershop, he makes quick work of the bullies and earns the respect of the townsfolk. The townsfolk seemed to be afraid of something, and it turns out they have every reason to be very frightened.

Lenz adored Holden, realizing that the older man was taking care of her on the shoot in much the same way his character cared for hers on film. Perhaps what she did not realize at the time was that the older actor was building trust, which is an all-important factor for characters in such a highly emotional film. Holden actually seemed to elevate the work of Lenz through his careful work with the younger actress throughout the shoot. The film explores the relationship between Frank and Breezy, a young hippie girl he encounters wandering around the grounds of his home.
