Although the lines were not straight, the patterns further visually isolated the cypress trunks and allowed the viewer to see the swamp over a period of time. 38 Sometimes nature intervenes when we least expect it, as it did when I created this image. I was in central Utah making long exposures of the Devil’s Garden Metate Arch at night using my Nikon intervalometer. My intent was to create an image of star trails circling the North Star but an unexpected cloudbank came streaking across many of my exposures, ruining all chances of capturing the star trails.
The story was about water moving through cypress swamps. As I kneeled low in the swamp water, I carefully watched the water. ) At the same time, I noticed the slight movement of the water spangles floating on the surface, and these became the focus of my image. I decided my exposure time should be exceptionally long to depict the water’s subtle movement. I added both a polarizing filter and a neutral density filter, which allowed me to make two-minute exposures. When the film was processed, the paisley-like swirls on the water’s surface created an entirely new subject.
