As opposed to a fully automatic exposure mode, in a semi-automatic mode you choose one of the components of the exposure equation (such as shutter speed or aperture), and the camera makes the rest of the settings.

Be sure to point the spot area at the portion of your subject that you want to measure. If necessary, you can point your camera at the significant parts of your image for your light measurement, and then restore your composition for the actual photo. Spot metering is a great tool for getting a light reading off the most important areas of your photo, and ignoring portions of the photo that are both very different in light intensity from your important area and also unimportant to your final results.
