Great photos start with good exposures (even if these exposures are later enhanced in the digital darkroom). These purists (and I) do want you to understand exposure. 30 Understanding Exposure Even the purists know that it sometimes makes sense to use one of the semi-automatic exposure modes that I’ve already mentioned in passing. As opposed to a fully automatic exposure mode, in a semi-automatic mode you choose one of the components of the exposure equation (such as shutter speed or aperture), and the camera makes the rest of the settings.

Be sure to point the spot area at the portion of your subject that you want to measure. If necessary, you can point your camera at the significant parts of your image for your light measurement, and then restore your composition for the actual photo. Spot metering is a great tool for getting a light reading off the most important areas of your photo, and ignoring portions of the photo that are both very different in light intensity from your important area and also unimportant to your final results.

Working with Aperture 59 ▼ These water drops, suspended on a web, reflected sunlight and the colors of the garden around them. I took advantage of the dark background to underexpose the image, bringing out the colors, and an intermediate depth of field setting (f/18) so that a horizontal cross section of drops were fully in focus. Allowing the drops in front and behind to go out of focus made their fantastic reflected colors more abstract and interesting. I was particularly pleased with the way the specular highlights (out of focus bright areas that appear to be optical artifacts) came out in this photo and in the water drop photo on the facing page.
