This chapter, and the one that follows, will begin to piece together these highly politicized discursive fields of modernism, as developed by leading guild socialists, in the pages of The New Age. Chapter 4 will then widen an exploration of the cultures of modernism with The New Age and will examine some of the journal’s wider modernist discourses found during the war period, to map the diversity of thought expressed in its pages at this time. Revolution at home Orage’s guild socialism during the war argued that the impetus for the redemption of British society needed to emerge, primarily, from a revolutionary labour movement. He wanted organized labour to become far more involved in the management of the economy through seizing on the new opportunities created by war.
