In July 1918, a mere four months after Pound’s “Swinburne Versus His Biographers” appeared in Poetry, Crane published a letter entitled “Joyce and Ethics” in the Little Review that lauded Joyce and Baudelaire at the expense of his erstwhile Victorian favorites: I noticed that Wilde . . ” I am not yet aware that Swinburne ever possessed much beyond his “art ears,” although these were long enough, and adequate to all his beautiful, though often meaningless mouthings.
