Of such were the gropings toward the motion picture machine. They were, however, gropings in the direction of motion picture projection. The motion picture camera had to wait for the invention not only of photography but of photographic film. Photography originated in 1837 when the Frenchman Louis Daguerre invented a process whereby a photograph could be exposed on a chemically coated plate.

They had to compete with existing forms of dramatic and live entertainment; they had to assuage fears of local politicians regarding the fire hazard of flammable nitrate film; and they had to prove to the establishment, the guardians of public morality, that theaters and motion pictures were suitable for the family. David O. Thomas in his study of early motion picture exhibition in Winona, Minnesota, shows that the successful nickelodeons established themselves as an organic part of the community.
