Field rotation limits the duration of exposures that can be made and also limits the areas of the night sky where objects to be photographed can be located. More on field rotation will be discussed later. The term GOTO refers to motorized, computer-controlled, mounts that can automatically find then track objects in the night sky. The computer used is a small handheld device, about the size of a small portable telephone, with controls for using the mount. You tell the computer what you want to see and the computer will then “go to” the object and then keep it centered in the eyepiece while you view.

One major advantage associated with an astronomical CCD camera with their Peltier effect coolers is low thermal noise. One issue with an astronomical CCD camera is that it is not self contained and must be connected to a computer to work. The self-contained nature of a DSLR is much more compatible with the portability offered by lightweight mounts for astrophotography. These aspects tend to favor using a DSLR camera when portability is required, but no reasons exist why an astronomical CCD camera cannot be used.
