A factor analytic study . ’ Technical proficiency is a legitimate goal of research training but is a means to an end rather than an end in itself. The structure of the book In the next chapter I introduce some basic research concepts and present a model of the research process as a series of stages through which any project is likely to pass. The book is organized largely in terms of this model, with the intention of taking you systematically through all the main phases you are likely to encounter in your research.
For example, empiricists argue that the only certain knowledge we can have of the world is that based on our sensory observations of it. Rationalists, on the other hand, believe that our senses are unreliable and that true knowledge is acquired through philosophical reasoning. The chain of being Ontological and epistemological assumptions are often closely intertwined and for most practical purposes it is difficult to think of them otherwise. But I can illustrate the interrelation between assumptions about being and knowing by reference to a very ancient scheme of thought, the chain of being (Schumacher, 1995).
The strategy is open to a wide range of research methods. Its eclectic stance is partly due to its policy-oriented applications and to its concern to engage directly with practitioners.
