Pat had enough money to do whatever he wanted with his life, yet he chose to focus his life and means on helping suffering alcoholics. His goal was synonymous with Hazelden's: how can we most effectively help the greatest number of people. Pat was always clear that Hazelden was here for one reason: to treat the patient. That's his ongoing legacy to us.

In 1939 the Second World War started and the steel industry could not get enough iron ore. That was when Pat returned to St. Paul to help his father, becoming vice president in charge of business operations. In this role Pat ran the business during the booming and lucrative years of World War II.  . Pat was also an extremely good businessperson. Part of that skill has to be attributed to his ability and willingness to listen to others when he was working on a problem. Just as he never held himself above other Fellowship Club residents, he never held himself above those he worked with in business.

Emmett started going to one of these groups in 1945. His recovery was very important to him, and with it he once again started going to the sacraments in the Catholic Church. He then began to urge his sons to go to AA meetings to do something about their excessive drinking. One by one they gradually heeded his advice. Hazen, the oldest and the son upon whom Emmett had been the hardest, stopped drinking on his own without going to AA. Larry went to Hazelden as its first patient in April 1949, and became a member of the board of trustees the following year.
