Hooton told the story of his Prohibition-eve midnight ride, and of his decadeslong career as a driver in St. Paul's posh Hill District at its aristocratic peak, in an oral history recorded in 1975. It is now in the Minnesota Historical Society's collection. Hooton died in 1981. J ' O O Pretty Fancy Baby Buggies Hooton was born to Irish immigrant parents in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1897. When his father died in 1912, young Hooton moved with his mother to St. Paul and soon entered the opulent world of Summit Avenue and what were called the "merchant princes" of the city.
All over the world, Spanish influenza savaged civilian populations. One-quarter of all Americans suffered bouts of flu. More than 600,000 Americans died, 10,000 of them Minnesotans. St. Paul saw more than 1,000 deaths; Minneapolis, more than 1,300. In New York City, 33,000 perished. About 2 percent of the entire American Indian population was killed. " Eight decades after the influenza pandemic, Hattie Marier had not forgotten its terrors. Marier is pictured here in 1997, at 102 years of age, at Birchwood Health Care Center in Forest Lake, Minnesota.
Marier's was a close family of five sisters and four brothers. Their parents, Annie and Lazare Sevigny, were "real Frenchmen," Marier said, who had initially emigrated with their respective families to Quebec. There the couple met and married in 1882. Soon many members of both extended families moved on to Minnesota, helping establish one of the state's few French immigrant districts, near Forest Lake. Marier was born August 22, 1894. She died in the spring of 1998, at 103 years of age. "It was hard living in those days," Marier said of her turn-of-the-century girlhood on the farm.
