The men chuckled and walked on. J. shrugged and resumed washing the car with extra care. J. attended high school at St. Ignatius and De LaSalle, went to technical school at Greer’s Automotive Engineering, then majored in business administration at Northwestern University. In 1918 he was called upon to fight in the Great War and departed Chicago for basic training. Fortunately, the Armistice of November 11, 1918, came before he was deployed, and he returned home to continue helping his father run the livery business, gradually assuming more important leadership duties.
Lamb remembers, “We couldn’t believe it. It was this brilliant dissertation on the relationship between a human being and a rubber. We • 40 • Family Business and Other Oxymorons were in awe. ” The pranks helped pull Lamb through a class he hated: Embalming 101. “It was necessary, but I couldn’t wait for it to be over. I only did it to get my license, and after that, I never did it again. There are some very talented people out there who are master embalmers, but I wasn’t one of them. Dealing with a dead human in that context is not something I enjoy doing.

His second rejection, and the fact that the Korean Conflict had formally ended with the Armistice of July 27, 1953, practically guaranteed he would not be called before the Board again. With this in mind, he asked Rose for her hand in marriage, and she accepted. On October 2, 1954, at Saint Dorothy’s Church, with Lamb’s sister, Peggy, and his brother, Dick, in the wedding party, the couple that had met in the womb became husband and wife.
