They are now eighteen years old, they are similar yet dissimilar, equal yet unequal. ] AKENATEN: When I lived in the desert as a child I learned to dream. At first it was difficult, my dream world was a barren wasteland of rocks and sand, I counted grains of sand in my sleep.

38 AKENATEN They stop and rest again. Not a word is spoken. The sun has started to set. As it touches the desert, SMENKHARE falters. TUTANKHAMUN kills him in a frenzy. His body is dismembered like the body of Osiris in the shadows. 68. NIGHT TIME. DESERT With flickering torches, Queen TIYE andkx search through the bodies, until they come upon TUTANKHAMUN lying unconscious amid the remains of SMENKHARE. The old woman sits in the desert cradling him in her arms. She sings a wordless lullaby, in which all the sadness and joy of the moment are mingled.

There is a silence. TIYE is holding the head O/"SMENKHARE in her arms. AKENATEN is turned into a fury at the sight. With a scream of anguish, he launches himself at TIYE and stabs her to the heart. He grabs SMENKHARE's head and kisses it. The soldiers fall back. TIYE: You shall have no soul. Nor spirit, nor body, nor shade. You shall have no house, no shelter, no tomb, no 39 DEREK JARMAN light.
