Before the program, I was always depressed. I thought I would have to live my life that way. I loved the effect alcohol and drugs gave me; when I didn't feel good, I just got drunk or wasted. I went to doctors to get pills for my nerves (or so I said). I spent years on the merry-go-round of feeling depressed, feeling worthless, and self-medicating. I finally made it into the program. I spent the first two years clean and sober, but still suffered from depression. Around that time, I heard a woman tell her story at a meeting and made the effort to talk to her afterwards.

I owe a great deal to my sponsor. She got me to start working through my pain and to begin to see the healing available in working the 12 Steps. My life had been one of being split off from myself. Most of my character defects were learned as a child in order to cope and survive. I could probably write a book on what happened to me before recovery and after, but I'll just give you some of the highlights of what I've learned. Maybe I never really had much of a chance to lead a "normal" life. Things were done to me that shouldn't happen to anyone, ever.
