Of the top-level architecture models the single global domain network is only suitable for relatively small networks, in terms of numbers of nodes and routers, without very complex routing implementations, but does offer advantages in customer service, perception and advanced feature implementation [3]. The multi-domain architecture comprising interconnected regional domains offers scaling superior to a single domain structure and allows for regionalised routing policies. Its disadvantage is the increasing cost of domain interconnection required as the number of domains increases, unless the domains are simply connected as a chain, in which case Internet BGP routing is compromised for the ISP customer.

Additional core capacity may either be higher capacity circuits to replace existing circuits or additional circuits, either supplementing existing circuits or adding new paths to the network topology where required. To enable the network to grow successfully it is essential that network traffic flows are measured and their growth trends understood. This has traditionally been very difficult on IP networks but recent developments, such as Cisco’s Netflow, provide the means to determine traffic flows and should be deployed as an integral part of the network.

4 Gbit/s links and have a total switching capacity of up to 60 Gbit/s. Such routers are now appearing in the core of large IP networks. Routers capable of switching terabits of information are expected to become available over the next couple of years. The physical location that houses a router, or a number of routers, is usually referred to as a ‘PoP’ — a point of presence. 5 Routing Protocols In order to route IP packets towards their destination, routers must maintain a routing table to map destination networks to the best next hop.
