I don’t want to be bored. If I’m bored, others will be too. We try to maintain a sense of exploration, innovation, excitement. Diversity is a big value, too. I’m not an idiot; I recognized that I’m a white woman and that I don’t “represent” Sadie Nash participants with regard to race and ethnicity. I knew this was a weak point. We are deliberate in our efforts to hire people of color at all levels of staff, and have a racially diverse board. Program participants are represented on the board as well and are recruited to join the staff.

We needed to put structure around our ability to do mission. That took a long time and really served as a springboard to where we are today. Over the years, the mission has not changed; the basic vision has been the same. Our transformation really began when I realized that if we invested in infrastructure, it would sustain us long term. We’d always been hand to mouth. I’d begun to see that what I was doing was not serving us in terms of sustaining the mission. I couldn’t sustain the people, which is the absolutely essential element for program.

It is not uncommon for the founder to hire program managers who will not challenge his vision for the organization or tamper with the program strategy. It is also very common to see boards that are lulled into complacency due to their trust in or devotion to the founder. The board may grow in size, but not in its ability to lead the organization. An organization might grow under this scenario, but absent a leader who is able to share ownership of the core program, potential for increased impact will be limited.
