Each area has 50 levels of brightness that are expressed in the graph. There is no such thing as a good or bad histogram, but there are exposure problems in an image that the histogram is able to show to the photographer. Virtually all digital cameras include a histogram display. You access it by pressing the Display button on the back of your camera, sometimes scrolling through several different screen overlays. It’s likely that your camera includes various options for you to view the histogram in different ways.

0 might be perfect for isolating a sharp subject against a very out-of-focus background (see 2-23). LARGER NUMBER = SMALLER APERTURE The f-stop number is a fraction; specifically, it is the focal length of the lens divided by the diameter of the aperture’s opening. The technical formula is N = f/D where N is the f-number, f is the focal length, and D is the diameter of the opening of the diaphragm. You can think of an f-stop number as the denominator in a fraction, and as you know, 1/4 is larger than 1/8 or 1/16.

In such a case, the normal exposure is too dark, and the histogram shows that the pixel bars are too far to the left for the scene. In this situation, you need to overexpose the image. Overexposing the image adds more light to the exposure, brightening the scene and making the white in the photograph actually look white. Another case where overly bright photographs are desirable is with high-key images. A high-key photograph is a brightly lit image on a white or bright background (see 2-13). High-key can also mean that there is simply a lack of dark shadows, such as the lighting seen on a television sitcom; the lighting is bright all over the set, evenly lighting every actor.
